VODAFONE’S EUROPEAN NETWORK POWERED BY 100% RENEWABLE ENERGY
Vodafone announced today that starting from July 1, 2021, all its operations in Europe—including mobile and fixed networks, data centers, retail stores, and offices—will be powered entirely by electricity from renewable sources. This marks a major step toward the company’s goal of reducing its carbon emissions to net zero by 2030, and across its entire supply chain by 2040.
To highlight this historic achievement, Vodafone will raise awareness of its greener network through a campaign in which its iconic logo will turn green across major social and digital channels in the 12 European markets where it operates.
In July 2020, Vodafone accelerated its plan to purchase 100% renewable electricity in Europe, moving the target date forward from 2025 to 2021, and committed to achieving the same in Africa by 2025.
Nick Read, Vodafone Group CEO, stated:
“From July 1, 2021, Vodafone customers across Europe will have the added assurance that the network enabling their communications is powered entirely by renewable electricity. This is a historic milestone in our journey to reduce global carbon emissions to net zero by 2030, helping our customers lower their environmental footprint while building an inclusive and sustainable society across all our markets.”
During fiscal year 2021, 96% of Vodafone’s total energy consumption was purchased electricity. Following this announcement, 100% of Vodafone’s purchased electricity in Europe will come from renewable sources, including leased properties.
All electricity used to power Vodafone’s European network is certified renewable, sourced from wind, solar, and other clean energy. Vodafone has direct Power Purchase Agreements in the UK and Spain. In Italy, Germany, Ireland, Hungary, Romania, Spain, Greece, Turkey, and the Czech Republic, Vodafone has secured Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) or tariffs. In Albania, about 67% of electricity consumption is supplied by local renewable sources, with the remainder covered by RECs purchased from its partner in Italy.
